Hoot Hoot, Flush Flush

My students need ten copies of both Hoot and Flush by Carl Hiaasen, and one audio copy of Hoot along with a teacher's guide.

Mrs. Matthews White Knoll High School
Lexington, SC Grades 9-12

I teach high school special education for students who will be going straight to the workforce after school. My students range from 9th to 12th grade but for this project, only the 11th and 12th graders will participate this year. My students love working in groups and reading together however, with all of the budget cuts, money for class sets of novels is very hard to come by.

With the recent focus on "green: technologies and living, my students need to understand just how important the environment is to our future. Many of these students do not understand or really seem to even think about the importance of preserving the world they live in.

With these books, we will create a literacy unit focused on helping students understand the importance of the environment and their role in caring for it. We will work on comprehension and research skills. We will pull information from other resources as well as create a final project for display.

So many times students only think of the here and now. I hope to encourage them to see how much they can do in their community to make it a better place to live. By helping the environment, it challenges students to think globally for solutions and ways they can truly make a difference. It will encourage students not to become wallflowers, but to really get active in their community and take responsibility for thier choices.
