Videos Bring Government And Economics Alive

My students need 8 videos to enhance their overall learning experience.

My job is to prepare my students for the leap they are about to take into the real world. I teach 12th grade Government and Economics. As a result, it is imperative that my students truly understand the choices and freedoms they have within our current government and economic system. As they are on the forefront of entering the "real world" I have found that they are unable to connect the actions of government and business with the current economic crisis we are facing.

I have realized that my students are not motivated to participate in the governmental process because they do not fully understand the system that has been set up and cultivated within the United States. They need to know how the many facets of government affect the economy and therefore their daily lives. Reading the same outdated text book only increases the problems I face. Instead of addressing the current issues that they would like to explore, they read about situations that seem like ancient history to them.

Creating a video library would address these issues. I know that using videos throughout my curriculum would allow me to stimulate my students minds in ways that I have been unable to do. Videos provide a break from the daily reading and instruction that are commonly used. As a result it grabs their attention and sparks their curiosity. If they are more interested in what they are learning then the amount of information they retain will increase as well.

With this additional base knowledge creating activities that allow for debate and discussion would be more beneficial to them. Adding this to my curriculum would allow me to continue to bring current events into the classroom. If students are able to retain more of the basics of government and economics I can ask them more thought provoking questions allowing them to make the connection between government, the economy, and their lives. This connection will allow them to understand how they can actively participate within their own government system, and therefore change the world that they live in.
