They want to write - won't you help them?! I teach all subjects to, inner city, third grade students at a school that has recently been labeled "declining." As with most inner city schools, many of my students move in and out of our school on a regular basis so finding a way to inspire and keep the students engaged can be extra challenging! Our school has a significant proportion of high-need, high-poverty students as well as 20% of our population are ELL students.

Although my students come from varied backgrounds - from Guam to Mexico to California to Louisiana natives - one theme ties them together, my students have strong familial pride. My students love to show and share their work with their families. Unfortunately, due to current "guidelines" teachers must keep all graded assignments in a classroom file for up to a year. Students don't get to share their successes with their families very often as a result of the portfolio guidelines.

With a high quality, high efficiency laser printer, colorful card stock, and binding combs, my students would be able to show off some of their work in a book made by them throughout the school year. Students would be able to use classroom computers to type letters, poems, and stories as well as add illustrations to their work. A laser jet printer would enable my students to print out their work on the sturdier and more durable card stock. My students would then be able to bind their work using the binding combs. The completed books would provide my students with a lasting remembrance of their third grade year, and boost their confidence in the work they are doing.

Without your help, my students will not be able to share their successes with their families. The opportunity will be lost and my students may forever lose the joy they have found in reading, writing and illustrating.
