I teach 2nd grade in a title 1 school. My students are eager to learn, and our attendance is high. The students are appreciative, but have little support at home. Many students are considered "at risk" and receive free or reduced lunch. I am a National Board Certified Teacher with a Masters in Reading, and it is my desire to share with my students a love for learning. As a 21st century teacher, I feel that it is my job to prepare students for the information age. Daniel Pink, author of the new best seller "A Whole New Mind", says that children are going to need to be creative in the near future in order to be successful in a competitive, technological, and ever-changing world. They need to be have empathy and be able to understand another person's perspective.

What is the obstacle I face? I've bought a wide range of materials over my ten years of teaching, and I have the technological "know how" to help my students learn. Now all they need is access to this information. An ipod touch holds up to 1750 songs, 10,000 photos and memory space for videos as well. The possibilities are endless as to what I could do with this to reach students of all levels-but mainly I could reach my lowest Hispanic and Chinese students. These students have a weak grasp on their alphabet when they come to second grade. I do not want them to "slip through the cracks" in education.

I need two iPod touches to meet the needs of my lowest students. I would put tutorials on how to add with regrouping, subtract, problem solve in math, analyze phonics sounds, and students would have access to the multiple book sets (many sets of Magic Tree House, Junie B. Jones, Henry and Mudge, and Frog and Toad books)I have. I would be able to move them consistently through levels of books so they could be on level.

What would it be like for these students to continue falling behind? I am concerned for their well being and self-esteem- when it would be so easy to remedy. You could make it possible for a group of students to catch up and feel like they can belong with their peers. They can stay out of trouble when they grow up because they will be able to keep up. If I want to help the children of tomorrow, I must make a difference to them today. Help me help them? Thank you for your consideration to some very special children who will never forget your support!
