"Selling books" is what it is all about. I am a K-8 media specialist in a nontraditional public school. We are a college prep charter school with a strict dress code and a strict discipline policy. We currently serve students from seven counties and do not have access to parent income information. We receive state and local funds but not regular education federal funds. We maintain high academic standards and require mastery of two academic curriculums.

K-5 students love to read, but when they get to the sixth grade it is more difficult to get them interested in a book. The problem worsens in the seventh grade, and when they get to the eighth grade it is like pulling teeth to get them to read a book from the library. We do not have a huge library and many of the books have been donated, but the middle school students are not even reading the new books that are on the shelves. The students are very interested in the books I read aloud, but they only check out books that their peers recommend.

I want to give the students a chance to recommend books to their peers by writing, acting in, and producing their own book commercials. First, this will require the students to read a book to use for their own commercial. Then, it will give them writing practice. It will also encourage other students to check out the great books in our library that they have seen “advertised.” I cannot do this without a video camera and a tripod and our school does not own either at this time.

Your funding of this proposal will make it possible for our students to promote the books in our school's library. It will help create lifetime readers and learners and we might even discover the next great actor or actress in the process. Being able to video our own commercials and show them to all of the middle school classes will give the students an opportunity to recommend their favorite books.
