As I walk into the 3rd grade hall, twenty- four bright-eyed faces greet me. Together, each day, my students and I explore all core subjects (Math, Reading, ELA, Science and Social Studies) and tender learning moments. Situated in a high-need community, the spark in my students’ eyes begins to whine as they complain of their lack of pencils to complete homework, the intricacies of their home life, erasers—necessary for correction, and lined- paper. Rapidly rationing resources, I attempt to assuage the frustrated expression on my students’ faces. With much creativity, pencils were found, erasers affixed and home issues counseled. Despite my every effort; however, I have yet to find a cure for the “Mad Marker Frenzy.” Each day, students plead for a dry erase marker. In literacy centers, markers are needed for phonic awareness, phonics, comprehension and other literacy activities. Unfortunately, math centers and white board guided practiced activities present the same annoyance. Before whiteboard use, students scuffle around the class desperately searching for a usable marker. WE do NOT have nearly enough dry erase markers to support the learning with our class. Using the resources at hand, there where times when students traded in their whiteboards for a pencil paper activity. Having a supply of whiteboard markers in our class, would allow my students to be able to fully interact and engage with the materials presented. Functioning dry erase markers, allows students to demonstrate knowledge and possible gaps in learning while teaching. Instead of the frantic realization that “my dry erase marker is dead,” my students will be able to focus on the task. Your help in putting an end to the “marker madness” will increase student learning and participation; positioning students on a path of success, heading towards content mastery. Despite the great change in the world, it’s the little things – such as a dry erase marker- that can make a difference.
