Don't Abandon High School Reading

My students need 50 copies of "My Abandonment".

We've given short shrift to reading for pleasure in our high schools for too long. My high school struggles like others to engage students in reading for comprehension and ideas. Our literacy team is working at multiple strategies from classroom practices to doing a school-wide book read.

Is literacy a losing struggle with today's students? Absolutely not. Although literacy is changing with technology, the basics of reading for comprehension and interacting with ideas has not changed.

The novel My Abandonment by Peter Rock is very loosely based on actual people in our area. The main character is an adolescent girl. Our students would find the book engaging with the local ties, short length of the novel, and the great writing.

We are hoping to create a reading program where students, teachers, and parents are all reading the same book. We will interact with the novel in different ways over the course of a month, and we'd like to conclude with a visit to our school by the author--he is local to our area. We want to make reading cool again in our community; this is a step toward that goal.
