Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach over 100 eager and ambitious 7th and 8th graders in Northern California who are determined to make college a reality. Despite the numerous challenges they are constantly bombarded with, my students are determined to learn and succeed. Both my students and I understand and realize that literacy is the major factor to their success and have become voracious readers. I want to continue to foster and support their love of reading. Over 85% of my students speak a language other than English at home. Many of their parents are illiterate or do not speak English at home. They do not have anyone to go to afterschool to help explain or discuss the reading. Despite these setbacks, my students have hopes of becoming the first in their families to attend a four year university. I am trying to expose my students to different types of literature to get them ready for their future. In order to be successful readers, they need constant reinforcement to improve their reading. Films based on books are a powerful learning tool; they make reading exciting and accessible to all students. They bring the book they are reading alive. These films will empower my students to read. They will also help aid the readers with the extra support they need to successfully read and engage with grade-level texts. Students will be able to check-out the films and an accompanying book to take home on a regular basis. My students will feel empowered as readers since they will have the necessary prior knowledge needed to follow along the books. This empowerment will add to their confidence as learners, and in turn, they will be ready for college. Your help will not only support my students' love of reading in these crucial grades, but will contribute to their success as first-generation college students tomorrow.
