I am a Physical Education teacher working with first through sixth graders. I want to help my students better understand how movement and activity will help keep their heart healthy. I work with at risk students and this club will help encourage the students to implement and utilize what they have learned at home.

Our students often are not given the opportunity to participate in extra curricular activities/programs due to their family's financial situation. While walking to our students during lunch they expressed an interest and desire in learning more about being healthy. Students with low-self esteem also expressed an interest due weight issues. Forming a club would allow students to increase their self-esteem, and give them the opportunity to be active. This club would be meeting everyday at lunch to work on health and exercise, through walking and exercise, as well as promote positive self-esteem.

Each day the students will meet with me to eat lunch and discuss eating choices and health. Once we are finished eating we will go outside and walk, run, do exercises for the rest of the lunch period. I want to start with empowering the students about how to become healthy or change now before it’s too late.

You can make this project possible for the students at our school by supporting us in getting the resources needed. By having these resources students can work hard, understand health, make healthier choices, and discuss self-esteem. Techniques and information they learn can be applied to their lives daily while at school and at home.
