Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This is a charter school in central Texas which enrolls high school (9-12) students in low socioeconomic status. The majority of these students are drop outs, on probation, parole or have been kicked out of their previous school. Our focus is to have relationship-based education to guide these students to graduate from High School, diploma in hand.

We have had a martial arts class offered at this school for over a year now. We have also recently had an increase in football, soccer, basketball and volleyball. There is a sharp increase in active, healthy after school activities, however we do not have the proper exercise equipment to accommodate them. Being fit not only allows the students to achieve in their favorite sport but it has been shown to increase self-esteem, confidence and alertness. This new sharpness will supply kids with the motivation to strive for college. It is also the best way to tackle obesity and change towards healthy choices at a younger age.

We need an Olympic size barbell and a weight bench to properly do bench press, dead lifts and other exercises. We need barbell weights to allow for more than one student to exercise at once to increase efficiency of the class and training times. Finally, we need floor mats to absorb the shock of weights and ground training.

Your help will allow our students to push themselves to the next level, achieve their physical goals empowering them to achieve more in and out of the classroom. With better physical fitness comes healthier eating habits, healthier choices and confidence to learn and prepare for college.
