Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am currently teaching 7th and 8th grade English at a Title 1 school in California. While the teachers and administrators work hard at making sure that every student is successful, students are constantly bombarded with enticements that may lead them into a futile future and lifestyle. Our school is located in a strong gang populated area. The sights of this lifestyle can often seem glamorous when students do not have expectations and support for their education outside of the classrooms. It is also easy to follow this negative path when they do not have a belief in their own abilities and understand who they really are. Many of our students often feel that gang membership equates to excitement and a respectable achievement. While we, teachers, understand that this is a constant battle; we know that if these students are given the right tools they will become academically successful, and stay away from gang membership. With so much negative influence luring our students into a life of gangs, I truly believe that meaningful education will prevent them from seeking this negative goal. Real and meaningful education will come when students are exposed to an education that transcends the four walls of a classroom and state tests. The only way this can be done is by giving all subject matters relevance and real world application. The way I intend to do this is through the use of technology. Technology will allow me to close the achievement gap present in my Latino and African American students. By embedding technology in my lesson plans, not only am I preparing each student for a successful academic life, but also the competitive world of technology. Many of the students I work with do not have a positive image of themselves. They believe that is it okay for others to determine their self worth. My students need a digital camera and a memory card that can be used to take pictures for a “Who am I” project where they can show their classmates who they are and how they view themselves. This project not only helps reveal who they are to the world, it will also help teach character traits; a California state standard. My ultimate goal is not for them to be able to take a state test and pass it. Instead, I want them to learn about themselves and help make positive changes that will impact their futures. I want them to see themselves for who they really are. I do not want their self worth to be determined by what others believe about them. I love teaching them California Standards through technology. In addition to the above mentioned project, they will also be producing movies, commercials, and making power-point presentations. This will make the subjects taught more meaningful to them since many will be bringing in prior technology knowledge. It will also spark an interest in what they will learn since it gives them a reason to learn it. These projects enable them to experience learning about their world and themselves from a different perspective. Since not all my students know much about technology, including technology in my classroom helps them get ready for the technological world they will soon face. It also helps bring my lessons to life by giving them projects that they can relate to. The support you give to my students will not only be seen in the classroom, but also in the community. By closing the achievement gap in the students' education, we are leading them into a fruitful future where they can become anything in life.
