Students are the future of this planet. I teach an inspired, curious, hard-working class of 20 fourth graders. Our 4th grade honors class is at a charter school that serves students from low income areas and works to give them the same opportunities and education as students in wealthier areas.

Our school has just expanded from being solely a middle school to including all of elementary. This has caused some financial growing pains. We do not have the funding for all of the supplies that classrooms would like. This is especially true for higher priced lab supplies and equipment. My students have worked on several projects this year related to protecting the environment. They are now turning their attention to alternate energy resources. They are interested in learning more about solar energy, but we lack the resources to go as in depth with the research as my class would like.

We need a variety resources for learning more about solar energy. Many of my students are visual learners, so having a DVD on solar energy will help to broaden their understanding of the uses of solar power. We also need solar cells and motors to allow students to experience how solar power works. The solar lab kits will help my students to see ways in which solar energy can be used to power different objects. All of these items will allow me to create a unit that will ensure that my students have a greater understanding of how solar power works and how it can be applied in the real world.

The difference that you make for my students today is a difference that they can make for the earth tomorrow.
