A Big Recorder for Little People

My students need a bass recorder so they can experience the joy of playing and hearing all the recorders in the recorder family.

I teach music to 425 students in grades K-6. This proposal will focus on my fourth-sixth grade students.

My fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students all play the soprano recorder as part of our music curriculum. The soprano recorder is a fun and engaging instrument, but I have noticed that adding the larger recorders such as the alto and the tenor really ramp up the excitement for the children. They love hearing the sounds the different sized recorders make and putting them together to create harmony truly helps them feel like they are making "grown up" music. Adding a bass recorder to the mix would really be exciting to them.

We would like a bass recorder to add to our classroom music instruments. Many students in my community do not have the opportunity to be in band, so I really feel like it is my duty to help all elementary students learn to play instruments together in an ensemble situation. Playing recorders of all sizes is a great way to accomplish this task.
