We are a high poverty high school where budgets are limited. But we have also found that students who love sports also will read literature that is based on their passion. As a result we are trying to obtain enough books to provide this opportunity.

Jim Tressel is a very successful coach at Ohio State, and his book has received a great deal of publicity. As a result, our students have demonstrated interest in the book already. After reading the book, I know that it is not just a book about football, but rather a book that teaches about success in life; football is just his basis. Unfortunately, this book is still in hardcover version as it is still a very popular book.

I created the course to meet the needs of those specific students who don't necessarily believe they like reading, but with the right "carrot" may not only read, but learn to be better than they are. Our school also has picked up the challenge to raise the bar for all students. Within this challenge I have chosen one book per course that will challenge students to believe in themselves, to achieve beyond normal expectations, and to seek ways to help others to do the same. Since the book is a collection of material, there is something for everyone in the book, and may just be the answer to the challenge in this specific class.

Despite the fact that the majority of our students are on limited family budgets and qualify for free and reduced meals, there is a substantial number of students who choose college and/or technical school. But I believe they can be better prepared for the challenge, and that is why I am raising the bar in all of my language arts classes. Regardless of their eventual field of study they can be leaders in their careers. Poverty shouldn't determine their success; education should determine if they break the poverty cycle they currently battle. Please help me to help them be the next generation of leaders.
