I teach art in a middle school. We are 5th -8th grade school and I teach students from all of the grade levels. For the 7th and 8th grade students, art is an elective which they choose to take. The student population varies from students who have international experience to ones who are on free lunch. It is a wonderful mix of students with a caring faculty and geared to achievement.

Art supplies are very expensive, particularly paint and fabric paints. To do this project, you need generous amounts of fabric paints. When the students have to scrimp, their work looks half finished and poor.

We work hard to be green. The students recycle used paper to make thick paper plates. They go through the whole process by themselves, which is very inexpensive. After the plate is dry it is painted black and then the fun begins. The fabric paints add dimension and color that other paints can't. The students find ways to use materials in a new and different ways that helps them express their creativity.

It is hard to do this project without help in buying the paints. The paints can be shared among all the students, but because of the demographics not all students are able to purchase the ones they need. The ones who are able to cannot afford the wide variety that your help will enable.
