My students want to read! Many of them look at books and want to be able to read, but just don't have the necessary experience with or exposure to books. I am the speech and language pathologist for grades PK-5 so my students are enrolled in our county's special education program. Our school is in a high need community in rural North Carolina.

Many times, my special ed students need additional or alternative instruction to help them learn a certain skill set. When students have difficulty processing information that they hear (auditory processing), it is very difficult for them to connect specific letters with the sounds that they make.

I want to make reading instruction different and fun for my students. The Earobics, Step 1 program targets phonemic awareness and decoding skills necessary for pre-reading and early reading activities. In conjunction with classroom instruction, this software will assist them with some foundational skills necessary for successful reading. I have used this software in the past at another school with much success. The children get to complete fun activities/games while learning how to sequence sounds, identify sounds and deconstruct words into specific sounds. An added bonus is that they get immediate feedback on their performance with lots of positive reinforcement.

Your help will ensure that my special education students will get every opportunity that I can offer them to be successful readers. Reading is such an important life skill and affects performance in all other academic subject areas. Success in reading leads to success in life. Functional reading skills will give these students the opportunity to become employable adults and productive members of society.
