World in Motion

My students need a digital camera to capture video for data analysis and a scanner to upload their hand drawn work onto their digital portfolios.

Who is accelerates the fastest from the starting line? Which kick generates the most force? How much faster does my dog move when he chases his favorite toy? All of these questions and more can be answered in our World in Motion project. I am a physics and mathematics teacher who has a whole host of 9th graders who are simultaneously intrigued by elements of science and inspired by a sense to help others. Our school seeks to combat the twin problems of student disengagement and low academic achievement by creating personalized, project-based learning environments where all students are known well and challenged to meet high expectations. We attempt to show how education can be redesigned to ensure that all students graduate well prepared for college, work, and citizenship.

We are in need of a digital camera and scanner that the students can use exclusively for our work. Currently we are sharing technology throughout our school with very limited results. A dedicated classroom camcorder would ensure that our workflow is uninterrupted and allow for maximum flexibility for capturing motion on our own time. Moreover the quality of the camera that we intend to use will provide quality videos which will allow our students to see motion down to the needed milliseconds that are important for video analysis. Currently our students are well aware of the limitations of their analysis are due largely to the limitations of equipment we currently have.

Our students are in need of a digital camcorder and scanner to capture high quality video that the students will use in both Physics and Algebra. Students insert the movies into data analysis software and get hands on experience learning content for both in a real world setting. As some of their work will be constructed by hand, the students need a decent scanner to include their work on digital portfolios. Using powerful data analysis software and creating professional quality digital portfolios enables our students to be better prepared to enter college level physics courses, especially laboratory offerings, and quickly adapt to the college level software programs such as Matlab or Mathematica. Since we actually prefer to analyze real life phenomena and improve our portfolios on an ongoing basis, the camcorder and scanner can and would be used all year long.

It is our sincere hope that we will be able to empower our students to see physics and mathematics as another lens with which to view motion in the world around them. Your generous support will allow us to achieve our goals and empower a new generation for whom Physics and Mathematics will be an option and not an obstacle. The challenge to create and produce high quality digital work is of high importance for our school and for our nation. With your generous contribution, our classroom will become better equipped to handle this challenge head on with much rigor and enthusiasm. Our future’s future thanks you.
