As we went to see Christmas Carol this weekend, I was reminded of the timeless battle against poverty and ignorance. As a literacy specialist in a school with students of great need, one way I've found to do that is to support students at home by sending materials that reinforce our standards at school.

I've put together a Family Resource Center at my school. This is a place where parents can come to check out materials to reinforce concepts at home. I invite parents in one at a time and show them how to use materials. It is a win-win situation. Because of the relationship built, very rarely do items not come back. Parents become empowered in teaching their children, students receive support at home, parents receive support and parents and teachers are partners.

I teach at the largest primary school in my state. Because of this, every child in the school would have access to the following requested materials that teach and reinforce alphabet/sound recognition; 1. 2 Alphabet Picnic Baskets 2. Alphabet Sorting Boxes 3. Alphabet Mystery Boxes. I'm stationed at the Family Resource Room each morning and personally invite parents to come in, talk about ways to help practice skills with children and check out materials to use at home. Research shows that children whose parents take an active role in their learning make significantly greater gains than those who don't. Taking an active role in a child's education to boost achievement is our goal. In a dark world, we can provide a light of support to parents who often have few resources.

With so much need in an economy such as ours, how do you know this project will make an impact? Well consider the fact that when you donate to this project, you are not donating to only one class, but to our entire school and that these materials will probably have a life of at least 10 years. Hundreds of families will be helped in supporting kindergarteners in learning their letters/sounds on the road to reading. BAH HUMBUG poverty and ignorance! With outstanding teachers and caring donors, poverty and ignorance can be defeated! Thanks for your consideration.
