Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For my students, seeing means understanding. They must connect what they see with the words that they hear in English in order to associate meaning with the new words.

I teach an amazing group of 26 curious bilingual 5th grade students in Texas. My students are in the midst of a very challenging school year. They are now in their final year at an elementary school where more than 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch, which also means that my bilingual students are in the last year of their transitional bilingual program. Most transitional bilingual programs in our area require students to transition to English in the 3rd or 4th grade, but my students haven’t yet made the switch. Thus, this is the first year they are receiving classroom instruction entirely in English with Spanish being used only for individual remediation. It is challenging enough for my students to make the annual progress required to pass their high stakes exams in the spring and move onto middle school, without also having to achieve a level of English that is sufficient to pass the high stakes test for the first time in English! Adding to this challenge is the fact that there are only enough bilingual students to create one bilingual 5th grade class at my school, which crowds us all into one tiny classroom and separates us from the other “monolingual” 5th grade students.

My classroom desperately needs the ultimate “seeing” classroom device, a document camera. This device, when connected to the projector allows me to project in real time anything that is underneath the camera. This means that I can do a science demonstration and have the whole class see it at the same time. Science demonstrations that really add meaning to science instruction are often difficult to see and show on a large scale, this device solves all of those problems instantly. More essentially, this means that I can demonstrate the steps in a hands-on science activity so that my students understand the directions and can duplicate the steps on their own. Additionally, good math instruction for students learning English requires the use of manipulatives. Not every manipulative is easily displayed, but a document camera can display the very manipulatives the students are holding in their hands. Lastly, a document camera gives the students more opportunities to display their own work instantly. For example, student work can be instantly projected to the front of the room for the whole class to see and discuss which makes this tool a great student motivator.

Help my students to see their own success in science and math by giving them the power to see everything they hear displayed simultaneously!
