Living History - Books Come Alive

My students need 15 biography titles, including books about Princess Diana, Queen Christina of Sweden and Tecumseh.

I am the librarian in a middle school which serves 490 students in grades 6-8. Almost exactly one half of our students live at, or below the poverty level. With education budgets being slashed, our library will receive zero funding this year, and the future doesn't look any brighter.

I am seeking funding to purchase biographies which will support a large school project. Living History is a collaborative effort between the reading, English, and social studies teachers. With this project all sixth graders research a historical figure and write a report summarizing the lives and accomplishments of their person. Next, the students prepare an oral presentation. The culminating activity involves the entire community. With city leaders, school ambassadors, and the school band leading the way, these students, dressed in character, march from city hall to the court square where they will perform an oral presentation of their character's achievements. Parents, community leaders, and students from other schools come to learn from this living history production.

However, in order to provide the support that our students need, we desperately need additional biographies. Our collection is grim. The average copyright date in the biography section is 1983. The grand prize winner is a book with a 1915 copyright date! It is frustrating to the students to have such a limited (not to mention unappealing) collection from which to choose.

Our library is the only support for many of our students. If we don't provide the necessary resources, the students' learning is impeded. Please help us build our biography section so that all students will be able to borrow, and take home new, clean, up-to-date books.
