Reading is Achieving! Keep on Reading with Accelerated Reader

My students need 19 sports and animal books to keep on reaching for their accelerated reader goals.

Hi! I am a Title 1 Reading teacher at a Kindergarten through 5th grade Title 1 school. I provided reading intervention to over 40 students a day.

Many of my students lack the necessary support at home to develop their independent reading skills. The biggest obstacle is the lack of appropriate books at their independent reading level. My school also requires students to take and pass a set number of Accelerated Reader test each report period. These lower level book are often difficult to find on the shelves of local libraries and in book stores. Another obstacle is finding books that will interest the children. Sports and animal books in a nonfiction format are high interest materials for most of my students-- especially the boys.

The 19 sports and animal books I have requested are a key to engaging my struggling students in independent reading at home. The lower level books I have requested are at their independent reading level. The high interest, low readability level of these books will enable my students to read at home to their parents or other caregivers. The books are all Accelerated Reader books that will also enable my students to take and pass the required test.

There is a saying "the more you read... the more you know" this is especially important to my struggling readers. As they read books at their independent reading level they will continue to find success in reading. They will become more willing to take chances with their reading skills. Your help will ensure that my students begin to develop the successful feeling needed to become a life long reader.
