Handbuilding for Kids

My students need a slab roller.

Greensboro, NC Grades 3-5

700+ students + 2 teachers rolling clay by hand = 4 aching arms! Ours is a highly impacted school in an urban setting, where seventy five percent (75%) of our students are on free or reduced lunch because their median family income is below poverty level. Our students do not have a good cultural arts background.

Each week, my co-teacher and I teach art to over 700 students in grades K-5. When I am here, our classes are doubled - that is, my class and my co-teacher's class are together in the same room, which means we have to prepare materials for two classes at one time. Our curriculum calls for the students to use clay for artmaking at every grade level. We do have a kiln, and we do have clay; however, we don't have a slab roller. We like to do slab-construction projects with most grade levels, and that means rolling out slabs for each student by hand - not an easy thing for the strongest of arm and back, not to mention the long hours it takes to do all the rolling and storing of the slab pieces!

A slab roller is the perfect solution for this situation. We have a table to mount it on, and someone handy with tools who can mount it in place for us. Now all we need is the roller! The North Star Polaris roller that I have chosen is, in my opinion as a professional clay artist, the best and safest roller for use in any situation. There are no wires or cables; all the "guts" of the machine are covered, and the North Star is adjustable so we can make slabs of various thickness. Having a slab roller will cut the prep time for clay projects by AT LEAST half.

Your donation will make it possible for our students to have even more clay projects each year, because it will be easier on the teachers to prepare. Thank you so much for your support!
