"My students are like a "box of crayons" coming from all walks of life. As I look over my classroom the students blend together to make a beautiful picture. Each student brings with them a love of learning, a desire to make a difference and strengths in many areas such as public speaking, acting and singing. Students have written songs about "The Diary of Anne Frank" and acted out scenes from stories such as "New Moon."

Our school district has cut money that teachers use to purchase supplies. Parents have helped in making sure we have pens, pencils and paper. Now the need for more has arisen. It started when one student picked up my copy of "The Freedom Writers Diary" and asked if he could read it for a book report. When the student presented his book report, other students wanted to read the Freedom Writers Diary and find out more about Erin Gruwell.

My students are waiting for their turn in line to read the "The Freedom Writers Diary." It would be wonderful if we had a set of "The Freedom Writers Diary", a collection of stories that brings the affirmation that one can succeed and hope never dies. The ability to have each student with a copy of one book that we can bring to life will benefit not just one but many as we continue on a journey of learning.

You can make a difference in my students' lives just the way that Erin Gruwell did with her 150 students. You can make a difference for my box of crayons.

HIDE
