Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach in a school that is in a high needs community. We have an 90% poverty rate and our students come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds.

Each year I teach a unit on author Jan Brett. Her collection of books are remarkable for children's literature. She writes a variety of folk tales that come from a diverse cultural background and other amazing tales. During the Unit we will be comparing the similarities and differences of Jan Brett's books. Students will discuss the characters, vote on their favorite book and watch her videos on how to illustrate her favorite characters.

I would like to give each student one of Jan Brett’s books to take home at the end of the unit. Children love her stories and fall in love with the characters and animals that are in them. This is how children find the love of reading. Based on last years results "Gingerbread Baby", I will need 20 copies of "Gingerbread Baby!" This will allow them to continue the unit at home.

So of us remember baking gingerbread cookies with our grandmothers in their kitchen each year for Christmas. My students do not have those life experiences. They have to read about them. Your help will not only bring a smile to their face by providing a brand new book, but you will also help children find their own love of reading. Jan Brett brings life to reading and you will bring the excitement of receiving something that will only belong to them.
