One commonality is their love for technology. They are excited by computers, by cameras, by ipods...anything with an on/off switch!
The greatest obstacle my students face is a lack of support at home. Many students come from single parent homes and there is simply no one at home in the evening because mom or dad has to work. Other students have parents who would love to give their child support, but they are not fluent in English and may not understand the content. In order for these students to be successful, they need access to information at home as well as school. This year I began a website to offer this kind of support to the students outside of the classroom. My students can access the Internet at home, after school, and in the public libraries in our city. I've created a blog with links to games, interactive blogging, and a library of math videos. These videos have been created to teach skills with meaningful context. Though much of the video is me using different technologies to teach concepts, I always have a hook that connects the topic to real life. This segment requires a video camera. With your help, I can replace my outdated, quickly fading, and inconsistent flip camera to add to my library of math videos. You will make my life much easier and undoubtedly inspire students to access extra support that they may not otherwise receive. Help me "Flip" their world upside down to a place where math is fun, math is cool, math is relevant! HIDE My students need on flip video camera to continue my creation of "Math in the Real World" videos for students to use at home for online support.
