Reading Committee seeking the opportunity to promote reading within families and across grade levels!

Our dedicated staff members work tirelessly to instill a love for reading within their students, with the hope that children will share their admiration for literature with family members. To encourage this dialogue, our committee plans to implement a "One School, One Book" program.

To implement this program, each family attending our school would be given a copy of the text, Indian in the Cupboard. Clues about the selection would be provided once a week during the month prior to distribution of the texts. Children would then receive their copies and would read with their families according to the schedule provided. Trivia questions regarding the text would be read aloud each morning by students. Teachers would facilitate discussion groups within their classrooms, along with other extension projects spanning the disciplines. As a culminating activity, students and their families would gather for a celebration of the text and possibly enjoy a presentation by a Native American speaker.

This program provides families with an opportunity to spend time together. As a result, parent-child and sibling discussions will increase. If active reading is modeled both at school and within the comfort of their own homes, children will undoubtedly begin to appreciate all that literature has to offer.
