Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a special education teacher and I teach kids with learning disabilities in reading, writing and math. I also co-teach with other teachers in social studies and science. My students are in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.

I have friend who recently started teaching 3rd grade in Milan, Italy. I wanted to start a pen pal relationship between her students and mine. I have shared emails and pictures with her school. She recently had trouble explaining what "dawn's early light" was in our national anthem. I took pictures to help her demonstrate and explain it to her students. Our students wanted to send a care packages to the class introducing themselves and our culture to her students. We decided to make a book about our city and state to explain to them because they don't speak English. They labeled the pictures and then drew pictures of themselves on the back with interest that they like to do in our country.

We wanted to laminate the books we were making so they could keep them in their school library and they would last a long time. However, our school ran out of lamination film. To make the book we needed the bind combs but we ran out of that. Then the students wanted to mail them with other items they collected to share but we found out that it would cost almost $50 to mail the care package. Our students have been trying to sent the package but the teachers and school have run out of money. We also wanted to take pictures and share them in the next book but we don't have a camera or color ink to print the pictures.

If our students had the resources to send packages and books and correspond with another school in another country they could learn so many things the from other students their same age around the world. They could learn about their culture. They could learn another language and help the students in Milan, Italy learn English.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
