Grades PreK-2

I am currently a first grade teacher. Our urban school houses grades Headstart through 8th, with a 98% rate of student recipients receiving free/reduced lunch, being reared in single family parent homes, and other socioeconomical status.

All of the students enrolled are eager to learn, but are faced with many poverty issues that may hinder them from obtaining the necessary supplies and materials needed to achieve high academic success. Many obvious distress signals seen in the Nation's urban schools include the increasingly overloaded and underfunded schools, confusion over actual goals and purposes. As a Teacher, I am expected to help educate students to rise above these challenges. Each student is expected to learn skills to survive in today's society out of textbooks that are older than they are. They are expected to keep their minds on acquiring skills to help them lead a more prosperous life, while outside of their classes, high crime and violence is going on in the streets. Many are faced with these distractions.

I have taught both first grade and kindergarten and could not imagine teaching without centers. We are in need of items to help expose students to Learning Centers and Stations that are relevant to each core subject being taught. Children learn best when they are actively engaged. Implementing centers in the classroom: 1. Promotes Independence 2. Helps Students become more responsible 3. Allows students to learn through self-discovery 4. Provides teachers with time to pull students one-on-one or in small groups to target specific academic skills, modify and enrich curriculum, and better meet the needs of individual students. These centers will help students become actively engaged in meaningful learning. They will work independently in a peaceful environment that is conducive to small group instruction.

Every year I tweak and adjust my system to meet the needs of my students. Over the years, I have worked hard to move away from the more "cutesy" centers that must be changed out weekly and focused on creating more permanent centers with open ended tasks. Changing out centers weekly can be challenging and demanding. Your help will ensure that my students are involved in activities that help to practicing and promote reading, writing, and spelling daily. With your help and support you will allow me as a teacher, the opportunity to implement centers in the classroom.
