Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Young children learn through play. I teach a combined class of preschool and kindergarten multiply handicapped children. While many are severely physically and cognitively impaired, they are still lovable little children who love to play.

The other classrooms in the building have kitchen areas for the children to learn and to play. In past years, I did not have children with the capacity to understand pretend play. This year, I have students who love to pretend play, but with medical issues that do not allow for them to spend much time in the other classrooms using their equipment and playing with the other children. We need our own kitchen, so that they can learn and play just like the other children in the school.

We need a nice sturdy kitchen set with stove, sink and refrigerator. I like the wooden sets, as they can be secured to the floor and walls; my students tend to pull up to stand and require firm furniture due to physical limitations. Pretend food and dishes must be easily washable, as many materials seem to end up in little mouths.

You can make a difference by giving my special students the opportunity to learn and play in a safe, fun and special environment.
