I am a media specialist at an elementary school teaching Pre-K - 5th grade. Eighty percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The transiency rate is very high. Many students are being raised in a single parent home with multiple siblings or raised by adults other than a parent (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, foster parents).Our school is located in a suburb of a large metropolitan city.

This is my third year as a media specialist. I have many reluctant readers in all grades. As part of the incentive of participating in the book club, I would like to finish each book by watching the movie that has been produced based on the book. Most of these students do not go to the theater on a regular basis. I took an informal poll of students and found only a few who had seen any recent movies at all.

One vital literacy skill is to be able to think critically and evaluate information. Guiding students to do this in a fun way by reading the book and then having Movie Meetings to compare and contrast the movie to the book, would be a great way to begin to hone this skill in younger students. A lot of teachers don't take the time in the class schedule to do things like this and I feel that it is a need within our school community.

Your donation will ensure that my students will begin to become enthused about thinking about information and evaluating information in different ways. Book Clubs are always motivating but to add a MOVIE time will really make the enthusiasm soar.
