"Our school serves a high-need, low-income community in Arizona. Many of our students are English Language Learners.
Due to budget cuts this year, there is no money budgeted for new classroom sets of books. A co-teacher on my team and myself would like to educate the students on the Holocaust and its modern day relevance. Unfortunately, district and school finances preclude the purchase of these books.
We need fifty-five copies -- that is two classroom sets -- of the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel. For many, it remains the greatest personal memoir of the Holocaust ever written. It is, as the New York Times notes, "A slim volume of terrifying power." Its length makes it ideal for in-class reading, and its emotional density makes it perfect for the current generation of children who, now separated from the Holocaust by over half a century, often struggle to grasp the the magnitude of the event. We will also connect the Holocaust to modern genocides, including the 1994 Rwandan massacres and the ongoing crisis in Darfur. The "Night" unit will cover state standards in expository reading and writing.
With your help, we will be able to present the Holocaust as a matter of grave historical importance and modern relevance.
My students need 55 copies of the book "Night" by Elie Wiesel.
The cost of this proposal is $628, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ."

Dear arthur, Julie & Jim, Daniel, Michael, Andrew, Louise and Arlen, Jeremy Taylor, Anna, Victor and Anonymous Donor,
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for your love and generosity. Though the students aren't yet aware of the project, I know they will be thrilled when we start digging into "Night". Many are unaware of the true extent of the Holocaust and the lessons begging to be learned from this tragic part of human history.
In educating our youth, we often forget to include the uniquely human elements of sympathy and compassion. With "Night", we will be able to tell the story of the Holocaust as it is meant to be told: not simply a regrettable piece of human history, but an avoidable human tragedy.
Experiencing the Holocaust through Mr. Wiesel's eyes will hopefully open the eyes of our students to their responsibilities as students of (as well as agents in) history.
Thanks again for all you do in changing the lives of our children.
With gratitude, Mr. T.

"Genocide will not end until we teach the next generation that it is not just a sad story on CNN or the front page of the New York Times - its horrific consequences are a reality for millions worldwide. Apathy will end when we learn to empathize, and I truly hope that is what this project will help accomplish."

"I gave to this project because when I read "Night," I was truly moved-- and it is my sincere hope that in experiencing this book, these students may help make the world a better place by cultivating empathy and compassion for all people. May this book touch their hearts, as it has touched my own heart-- and may the compassion and empathy these students learn from this book bring light to their lives, and the lives of others."
