I am the only business instructor in a low income school. I teach students in grades nine through twelve all aspects of business including marketing, business law, employment skills, and basic and advanced computing. Our community has been faced with many hardships in the past 18 months including the closure of two local industries that anchored our community and the prospect of unemployment for many parents and guardians of our students.

The obstacle we are facing is huge: my students have proven that working through the problems that we work on in our advanced and basic accounting courses improves their performance on tests and quizzes. They receive an opportunity to try it as a class, ask for guidance from peers and work on projects together without having to make copies of everything they are working on to project on an overhead projector. In all of the classes I teach, the ability to show the process improves performance.

With an ELMO document camera, my students would be able to present all of their work to everyone in the class and show the process they used. In addition, it allows everyone to participate and help each other. It will also allow me, as the instructor, to walk through the process I am using without having to waste precious teaching time to make a transparency of each student's work and compare with the final answer. Students are able to present their information with others which allows for individual instruction. For example, as my students track the stocks they have "purchased" as part of their Exploring the Job World curriculum, they are able to present their information to the other students in the class, show the graph they have created by hand, and evaluate the success of their stock purchase. They are also able to show their graph to everyone and let others share their ideas as to why the stock of performing (or not performing). The students will be able to edit their resumes as a class and I am able to show great examples of work that they have produced.

Your help will ensure that my students receive the content resources they need for success in the business world or as they enter college. Additionally, it will allow my students to explore different types of media within our curriculum, such as popular magazines and excerpts from books.
