Our school is located in an economically impoverished area, and many of the students travel over an hour to attend the school.
Being from a rural, economically impoverished area, my students have very limited resources. Our school is often the only access that they have to technology and books. Frequently, our books are "hand-me-downs," but when we do have the opportunity to receive new books, students are excited and more engaged in the material. 'Blood Done Sign My Name', is a true story about an event that occurred locally. Many of our students are familiar with the setting, but have no idea of the entrenched racial tension that occurred in the town. The book is frequently used in college classrooms and is a local favorite. Tim Tyson, the author, is a close friend of mine, which will allow me to bring him to the classroom to speak to my students. Tyson's book has also been turned into a one-man play, and the actor frequently visits public schools to do performances and theater workshops. With your generosity towards this set of books, my students will have the opportunity to engage in a college-level text, with a college professor, and cross disciplines into the fine arts. I have no doubt that this book, and this educational experience, will both enlighten students about the history that surrounds them and empower them to be the change they wish to see in the world.
