Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students would rather be at school than almost any other place. The parents of our students are very appreciative of everything our school does to help their children learn and improve their future. I teach 2nd graders at a title one school with very high parental involvement. We have 100 percent participation in parent-teacher conferences and have several family nights during the year. We have a large percentage of English-Language learners. Our school is located in a very low income area and all students receive 2 free meals a day.

Our school district,like many, had to cut teachers' salaries and supply budgets. My class was extremely engaged in our study of "The Night Sky". We have a home-made planetarium(my husband made it out of giant garbage bags) that shows the phases of the moon and some of the constellations. They wrote about space while sitting inside the planetarium and talked of nothing else for weeks.

How amazing would it be for the children to be able to take compasses home to locate and view actual planets and constellations. Several family nights would be planned to view planets and constellations up close.

Your help and support would be greatly appreciated. These materials would make it possible for my students to enhance and take their scientific leaning to a whole new level.
