"Building fluency and comprehension in reading! The student make-up of my classroom is very diverse in terms of the students’ cultural background and learning abilities. Their reading levels range from barely able to read to reading longer books independently. I have students who are still drawing pictures and sounding out every word in order to write to students who are ready to write a short story. More than half of the students in my class are ELL students. For many of my students, English is not their first language. Therefore, it is very important for them to hear fluent reading to help them build fluency.
Many of my students are behind in their readings. Research has shown that the more students hear fluent reading, the better they are at their reading. When these students go home, there is not always an English speaking adult at home who can read to them. The only time they will hear fluent reading is during read aloud in our classroom. However it is difficult to read to these student as often as they need to be read to My students need mp 3 players so they can listen to fluent reading. The mp3 players will allow me to load more than one book at a time, which will allow the students to read different books without having to switch between CDs or Cassettes. The headphone splitters will allow students to share the mp3 player. Therefore, students can listen to books at the same time. Your help will make it possible for my students to be able to hear fluent reading, which will help them build fluency. Once they have heard what fluent reading sounds like, they can use it to help them in their own reading. Being able to read fluently will help them comprehend their reading because they are going to be able to focus on the meaning of the text instead of on how to read it. HIDE My students need 6 mp3 players and 6 headphone splitters. Ms. V.'s Classroom:
