"Just a small town girl (or boy), living in a lonely world..." In my tenth grade English and Communications classroom, students are continually challenged to do well. My favorite quote sums up my teaching philosophy: "You'll never achieve 100 percent if 99 percent is okay" (Will Smith). This speaks of the importance of giving 100 percent effort in ALL situations. Yet, certain barriers stand in the way of students reaching this potential. Situated within a community that blends farms and neighborhoods, many students at our high school do not see beyond the borders of our sub-rural community. Too many do not dream of the possibility of college, whether for financial reasons, or because they have not been dared to dream. "Anything less than the best is a felony..." It is common knowledge that every student has the potential to do his or her best. If students are able to see themselves in this role, their eyes can be opened to the possibilities. Will you help this happen for my students? "Sweet Dreams are Made of This..." My dream is to have the ability to capture important moments during speeches, dramatic presentations, and class discussions on video so that students can reflect on what they did well and what they can improve upon. To achieve this dream, I am asking for a Sony Hard Drive Camcorder and a tripod. My vision is to have the camcorder ready at all times to capture important moments that occur within my classroom. I would also like to make the camera available for student use to produce videos such as documentaries and movies. "One thing leads to another..." With your help, small successes--a great introduction on a speech, a successfully memorized monologue, a fantastic sequence of filmed shots, a stellar comment in a class discussion--will snowball into confidence, motivation, and determination for these students who might not currently see themselves as "college bound." Will you help me to encourage my students to say, "the future's so bright, I gotta wear shades?"
