Capturing Reluctant Readers with Poetry and Novels in Verse

My students need 60 new books including book titles from "After the Death of Anna Gonzales" to Wolf Pack of the Winisk River" for the library's collection of poetry and novels in verse.

Poetry shakes the soul and inspires students to read. I am the librarian in a middle school (6-8) that services an urban student population--48% of our students are minorities, and 45% are low income. Approximately 30% of our students function below grade level and for many of the students their school library is the only place they have free access to reading materials.

Poetry and novels in verse are very popular in our library, unfortunately our collection is small and worn. In fact, when teachers check out the poetry books from the library for a unit there are only a few books of poems left for students to check out themselves. Of our books in verse, 60% have circulated three or more times this school year and 80% have been checked out at least one time since August. The demand for poetry is always high, but will peak during April, which is National Poetry Month.

Our library needs to improve their collection of poetry books and novels in verse. These books are excellent because they are accessible to students at a variety of reading levels. Novels in verse and poems about sports and relationships are also in high demand by our more reluctant readers. Poetry can also be used in the classroom for reading skills instruction (fluency or comprehension) and examination of a specific author's craft (simile, mood, foreshadowing, etc). Ultimately, readers become better with practice and providing students with access to poetry and novels help make this happen.

Your help will ensure that my students continue to be excited about reading. Students who spend more time reading improve their literacy skills which results in an increase in student growth.
