We Want to Love Rainy Day Recesses!

My students need Write and Wipe Lapboards, Markers, and Erasers, Sight word Practice Boards, a Math Quiz Game Show, Telling Time Flash Cards, a Standard Measurement Instant Learning Center, Spin and Learn Reading Games, Classic Games for Beginners, and a U.S.A. Map Floor Puzzle.

The rainy season is upon us, and my 3rd-grade students and I often need to spend up to 8 hours in the same small classroom! Since our charter school is located in a low-income, violent neighborhood, these same children often go home only to spend the rest of their rainy evenings and weekends indoors as well.

I like to make our indoors time enjoyable with games, learning centers, and movement. I've found that the most fun way to do so is to offer a rotating selection of activities that the students can sign up for. That way each student gets to "play" with the learning materials that he or she chooses, and all of us have so much fun that we almost forget that we can't go jump and run around outside. However, this is my third year at the school, and our games and activities are getting pretty worn out. I'm at the point where I need to replace them with new ones, especially since here in North California the rainy season is just about upon us.

I would like to have new games and activities that the students can play individually, such as the Sight Word Practice Boards; in groups, like the Classic Games, and Spin and Learn Reading Games; and as a class, such as the Math Quiz Game Show. The "Heads Up Seven Up" of my day was fun on rainy days, but I'm a firm believer that games can be educational AND really fun! I've seen my students' faces light up when they master skills during play, and on dark, rainy days, lit-up faces are wonderful to see.

Your help will ensure that my students' rainy day recesses are filled with laughter, teamwork, and learning. When these students return to a cold home after a day at school, their hearts and heads will be filled with warmth and happiness!
