I teach in 6th grade science to 85 students in a high poverty area in South Carolina. Many of the students are struggling readers and require reinforcement of key science concepts.

WE LOVE MUSIC!!!!!!! Many of the students I teach are struggling readers so the textbook is difficult for these students to comprehend. However, most of the students love music and can tell you the words to almost any song on the radio.

"Science iPod-ulary" will address the critical need for students to understand science vocabulary. Research has shown that vocabulary knowledge is a critical factor in comprehension, fluency, and achievement. Researchers estimate instruction explicitly focusing on vocabulary development can lead to an increase of up to 400 words per year. By using a compact disc player, iPod, and musical lyrics and tunes, I will use music to help students learn science vocabulary and other important concepts.

"YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A CHILD'S LIFE." You will make it possible for my students to be successful in the science classroom by presenting science vocabulary and concepts using music. Since my students are struggling readers, music is a great way to introduce new vocabulary. It also allows students who are usually not able to succeed in the classroom to really shine and feel great about the learning process.
