Exploring the Planktonic World

My students need two microscopes and a plankton net.

I teach Marine Biology as an elective to seventh and eighth graders. Students choose this class with the expectations of exploring their curiosity about the ocean and its organisms. In this class, the emphasis is on critical thinking and discovery. We are a Title I school, serving students from low income families.

The planktonic world offers many curious organisms for students to observe and study. In fact, these organisms appear and often behave like many of the creatures that they encounter in their video games. As the ecological role of these organisms is vital to life on earth, deep understanding of the planktonic world is key to the development of environmental stewardship in young students. Many of my students do not have opportunities to participate in enriching experiences related to academics. This activity would allow them to get "lost" in learning.

I have a plankton lesson that my students participate in. Microscopes and a plankton net would bring the lesson to life. These materials would offer them an authentic scientific opportunity.

Your support will enable my students to explore the unseen magnificent world of plankton as they experience the joy of learning to discover.
