Writers Need Writing Notebooks

My students need 22 writer's notebooks, 22 Writing Journals, and an electric pencil sharpener.

My classroom is full of wonderful students who love to read and write. They are 22 fourth grade bilingual students. My students come from low income families, but they are a bunch of eager learners.

At the beginning of the school year, my students' parents were asked to get their children notebooks for various subjects, including writing notebooks and writing journals. Since times had been difficult for many families, some of my students don't have writing journals or writer's notebooks. They use folders and loose leaf paper or they use the same notebook for two subjects.

My students need writers notebooks and writing journals, so they can use them during writer's workshop, journal time, and centers. Having all the same notebooks will encourage them to write amazing stories,learn to write different types of writing such as narrative, expository, and persuasive, and biographies. They will also have the writing process in their notebooks and will be able to read it and review it as they write independently or with a partner. The writing journals will provide them with prompts to write about during journal time. The pencil sharpener will allow me to provide them with sharpened pencils and will save us plenty of time. I plan to assign one student to sharpen pencils early in the morning, so they don't have to go around asking for a pencil sharpener and waste valuable writing time.

In addition, I would like to ask you to think about the benefits that my children will receive by having the materials they need during writer's workshop. They won't be distracted looking for their notebook or looking for loose leaf paper. Children will be able to keep all their writing in one notebook. Finally, they will be able to go back and read all the memories they write about in their journals.
