Matilda Books, For High-Need, Curious 5th Graders!

My students need 35 copies of "Matilda" by Roald Dahl for a daily read-aloud in my classroom.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach all subjects to over 30 fifth-graders in a public K-8 school that serves a high-need community. All of my students receive free lunch; all of my students are being raised amidst some of the toughest conditions in America. I began this year with 36 students, over half of whom are below grade-level in reading, and 4 of whom are special education on a kindergarten reading level. My school has not made adequate yearly progress three years in a row. Primarily English language learners, the students at my school often struggle to pass standardized reading assessments. Budget cuts in Arizona and our school’s inability to make adequate yearly progress have forced our district to reduce our staff and the amount of money for supplies and books. There is a shortage of everything, from whiteboard markers to computers, and paper towels to novel sets. Our district has discontinued field trips for all students. Let’s remember that this means that there are no field trips for children who have never had the opportunity to leave their small concrete neighborhood! Most of my students have never left the state, let alone been to a zoo or a museum or a natural lake. The only books most of the students have ever had are the ones that the school has given or loaned them. My students are just as curious and capable as any other students. They just don’t have the resources and opportunities to explore like other children in America. The solution is simple: these students need attention, resources and opportunities. I am requesting a book set of "Matilda" for my entire class. Everyday after lunch I read aloud to my class. They each have a book and follow along. When I ask my students what their favorite part of the day is, they usually respond with the read-aloud because they say it takes them to another world! We just finished another Roald Dahl classic, "The BFG," and they are begging for more of his stories. If we receive the requested copies, we will read the story everyday, practice fluency and vocabulary, use it to learn the state reading standards and then do a follow-up project and essay. I ask you to think about my classroom. I know that you have the opportunity to help any classroom. I also know how grateful my curious, extraordinary little fifth graders will be when you decide to give them a bit of care and maybe just one opportunity for exploration. Either way, thank you for taking interest in my students and other deserving students in America.
