My advanced class is currently reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" and after some gentle prodding are really showing that they have an innate ability to analyze, understand, and enjoy literature.
When we were halfway through the book several of my students approached me and asked if we could read another class novel in the future.
I can't begin to tell you how thrilling it was for me to not have to force literature down my students' throat, but instead have them ASK to read!
The students even took it upon themselves to poll each other on what books they would like to read. They came up with S.E. Hinton's "The Outsiders" and Henry James' "Turn of the Screw." I am now facing several issues. The town I live in is not a place in which I can readily find 23 copies of even a classic novel. On top of that, my income is not such that I can afford to buy numerous class sets. Any donation you can make to this project will help to ensure that this interest in reading that sparked in my students can stay lit and even thrive! HIDE My students need 23 copies of The Turn of the Screw and 23 copies of The Outsiders.
