I teach grades 6-8 in a school that serves a low socioeconomic population; the majority of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Our students come to us with difficulties in most all core content areas!

To efficiently address these deficits and engage students, educators must use creative resources that students find engaging! Students today have been defined as digital natives; most educators are digital immigrants. WE MUST BRIDGE THIS DIVIDE! In fact, when surveyed, our students said they spend two hours or more each night at home watching videos and spending time on social networking sites (Facebook) on the internet! Amazing, huh? How can educators attune their teaching in the 21st century to meet the needs of our digital learners?

I believe that the I-pod Touch is a technology tool that serve that purpose! It is difficult to narrow down a few ways that students would be able to use the I-Pod Touch, but I have created a list of some examples below: - Students/teachers can download audio from the web. (So, students can listen to audio books, famous speeches, spoken articles, songs, or use a text-to-speech feature to read any website aloud.) - Students/teachers can explore and create Web apps. (Students/Teachers can explore websites created just for the I-Pod Touch. So, students can do virtually everything from taking notes digitally (Noter), to creating a personal finance plan, to a goal tracker, to Mambe, an online photo journal program.) - Students/teachers can download apps to the I-Pod touches. (Students can use the I-Pod Touch as a data collector, or as a graphing calculator and much, much more!) - Students/teachers can create, share, and post videos, podcasts, and photos.

I have purchased one I-Pod Touch for my classroom. I just cannot express to you how anxious and eager my students are to learn whenever they encounter the I-Pod Touch! I feel like I am finally speaking the language of our students! Please help us so our children don't fall behind technologically in a globally competitive market! Please help us to TOUCH the lives of our learners!
