Reading About Ourselves

My students need 11 copies of "Our Town", 15 copies of Agatha Christie Play Collection, 12 copies of "Growing Up Native American", and 15 copies of "Where the Pavement Ends: Five Native American Plays".

I teach in a small rural timber town where money is tight for everyone, and most especially the parents of my students. The school must provide most of the common materials like paper and pencils. "Luxury items" like their own copy of a play or short story collection to read in class is unexpected. Giving students the opportunity to experience literature from their own and other cultures expands their view of the world and hopefully, gives them the incentive to seek things they thought were beyond them, like college.

My particular program has a number of Native American students. Native American students have one of the highest drop out rates in the nation. Getting them excited about school, about attending is tough enough without hand me down books and outdated textbooks. Exciting them about learning so that they will take the next step to COLLEGE Is what this project is all about.

I have had one project funded by Donorschoose donors! You cannot imagine the excitement of the students and myself when that first box of books arrived! They are ravenously consuming the novels, and I want to catch them while they're hot!

Reading aloud is one of the truly great experiences students have. Reading short stories and plays about yourself is even more intriguing. I have chosen two Native American texts and two texts by white writers that I hope will draw in my reluctant readers and participators and create a classroom full of learning and new experiences.
