I am a first year language arts teacher. I teach 10th and 11th grade students. My rural Ohio school is in a high poverty area, and funds limit our ability to keep classroom materials current. Many of my students are living in semi-poverty to deep poverty situations. I know I do not have the classroom funds to enrich their education with new books. My students face many difficult life situations everyday, and I know they would appreciate reading a selection that also deals with a character who struggles to make ends meet and desires to go to college or better herself in some way. By funding this project students will read the book "Make Lemonade" which is about issues that they face everyday outside the classroom: themes of parental love, sexual harassment, abuse, independence, and the value of education. By reading this novel and discussing these themes I hope to give my students an inspiration to "make their own lemonade" when life gets them down. My students need to believe in themselves, and I feel this is one way to help them achieve the belief that they can succeed despite their economic and family situations. Your help will ensure that my students are given an opportunity to read a fictional story that they can relate to and hopefully find some inspiration in their own lives. My students need 25 copies of Virginia Euwer Wolff's novel "Make Lemonade". HIDELive Updates
