Visual Literacy And Digital Photography, Part 1

My students need a digital camera, a small tripod that can be placed on a wheelchair tray, and a large adjustable tripod.

I teach a self-contained high school class of students with autism, Traumatic Brain Injury, and moderate mental disabilities in South Carolina.

The students in my class have a variety of strengths and a variety of needs. I have students that are able to read and comprehend at a third grade reading level and I have other students that are learning to read safety signs that they will see in the community. I have students that are able to read and follow a written task analysis to complete functional activities, such as washing clothes and cooking, while other students require picture cues to allow them to be more independent. The students in my class participate in a variety of activities within the school and the community. Some students go to PE class with their non-disabled peers while another attends weight-lifting class and another attends yearbook class. All of the students in my class participate in Community Based Instruction, including, but not limited to, vocational training and grocery shopping. Because of their disabilities, many of my students are unable to recall information about activities they participate in or tasks that they complete at school. These students would benefit from a visual prompt to help them to talk about the activities with their family and friends or to write about in our class newsletter.

Digital photography provides a way for the students to "capture" a visual prompt, the photograph, that they can later retrieve to convey information verbally or in writing. The use of a digital camera will also assist students in learning to recognize and understand safety signs in the school and community. After instruction occurs in the classroom, students can then locate the sign, take a picture, and import to the computer. Students can then write a sentence about the sign, using their own words and create a Power Point or Photo Story that they can watch to review and reinforce signs that they have learned. A digital camera will also allow students to take pictures of each step of a functional activity that they are learning, for example how to operate a washing machine. The students that are unable to read printed words can follow a picture task analysis to operate a washing machine, or complete other functional activities, independently. Because of the unique needs of the students in my class, the students would benefit from different types of tripods for the camera. I have a student that is in a wheel chair that would need a small tripod that can be placed on her lap tray to operate.

Your donation will help the students with disabilities in my class to be more independent in both their receptive and expressive language...and in life!!
