Measuring accurately is an important part of mathematics. This is true for the students I teach in Algebra 1, Statistics, and AP Calculus at a rural, low-income school in southeastern Iowa.

There are many wonderful students at our high school, but they lack the supplies and experience necessary to measure items accurately. We often have to borrow materials to complete units and activities in our courses.

Having access to measuring kits with specialized tools would be helpful so that we can discuss issues that deal with measurement 'in the moment'. Currently, we do not have that luxury. These kits would allow students to measure distances for large projects and minute pieces for small projects. Their future instructors at the collegiate level will expect that our students will have experience with the precision and accuracy necessary to complete scientific tasks. Additionally, learning in a problem-based instructional format will help all of my students in life and give them skills every citizen should have.
