Music can help our students become better readers! I teach K-5 music in a gender specific (All-Boys and All-Girls) at-risk school with a high Hispanic population. My elementary school is located in a high poverty area in Nevada, and our students are very "street" smart with very little opportunities available to them.

Most of my students are very poor readers who do not get any additional help at home with their reading skills. It has been well documented that the use of mnemonics through various musical chants, helps students, especially the primary level, retain basic reading concepts such as: words, the story-line and overall comprehension. Play rhyme books work very well when developing musical chants that help reinforce these concepts. Since our school library has just a few of these books, my music students can benefit tremendously by purchasing a set of these play rhyme books.

Our music program needs approximately 50 play rhyme books. These books will be an invaluable resource to help my students develop better reading skills. I will take these precious books and develop exciting mnemonic musical chants to help my students become productive members of our society.
