How to Eat Fried Worms!

My students need a teachers' guide and 35 copies, one for each student, of the book "How to Eat Fried Worms".

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Teacher, I liked the book better than the movie." I'm a fourth grade teacher in a small rural town. I teach all the subject to my students. It's located in a town where the poverty level is high and the majority of my students are in the free reduced lunch program.

When the new school year began I asked my students to show me by raising their hands if they liked reading. I told them to be honest a if they disliked reading. When I asked the question of who disliked reading 80 percent of my students raised their hands. I was surprised of how many students admitted that they didn't like reading. I told my students that I was going to make it my goal to make them love reading by the end of fourth grade, or at least appreciate it. When I asked my students why they didn't like reading most of them told me that they hated reading the anthology book, which is the grade level Language Arts text book. They said that most of the stories were boring and not complete. So, to motivate my students to read I chose a book that they could relate to. As we read this book the kids were getting excited and wanting to keep reading more chapters a day. When we finished the book I had them watch the movie based on the book. When we finished watching the movie all of my students were upset, because the movie wasn't as great as the book. According to my students, the movie left out many interesting and important parts out.

The problem is that I need another book that my students can relate to and that they could compare to the movie. I will need 35 copies of the book "How to Eat Fried Worms" and a teachers guide to the book. This project will continue to motivate my students to enjoy reading a book. They will be able to relate the story with their life because the story has events that could happen to someone of their own age. Also, my students will practice an important standard that is required in fourth grade which is compare and contrast. The students will compare and contrast the book with the movie. Hopefully having the students realize that the book is better than the movie, as it is always.

With your generosity you will make it possible for my students to continue enjoying reading a good book. They will realize that they could make their own movie in their head by just reading a book. Their love for reading will continue to blossom.
